When it comes to photography, I want nothing more than to paint my friends in the best possible light. To make them feel seen in the way that I see them: radiant and beautiful in an honest sense. My greatest gift is my eyes.
I think that's why I love photography. Because so often I see things that are so beautiful. The light coming in from my windows. A glint. A form. It becomes a mood. A poem. I’m compelled to share that with people. I want them to share in the beauty that was always there.
Words are not enough. I can't just tell someone they are beautiful. I need to show them that they are. And I want them to believe me. That the arrangement of atoms into their features that are composed into their face was never accidental. I want them to be convinced.
One of my favourite gifts to give is a film negative. It is the crystallization of a moment witnessed; physically there with us, permanently altered by the light that bounced off of you. An artifact that absorbed the actual photons that touched your skin.
I have a deep reverence for what is already there. Photography is noticing. And if we consider photography an art form, then everyone is an artist. Just because it is not externalized doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. It's just a private viewing between you and the universe.
